First of all, in order to use VoIP, the hotel should provide microphones and headsets.
The role of VoIP in providing guests greater communication access is that they can make calls anywhere in the world, there isn't any interference and they can use videovision, webcams, share pictures, etc.
However, if hotels have this facility, they should constantly advertise it - on their website for example - and transmit the message to customers in a way that they would want to "keep in touch" with their family and friends.
By having this feature, the competitive advantage is that it reinforces the hotel's image by. Also, it is an investment matter but guests pay only the price of internet access, not the phone call. And the guest has the choice: to be connected or not.
The major inconvenient would be that guests may need to use the same communication tool than the person they are calling (ex: Skype, MSN,...).
